Wilhelmus Adrianus van Berkel was a butcher in Rotterdam in the late nineteenth-century. He invented a cutting edge slicer then evolved his business to manufacture scales. This red Berkel scale dates from the 1950 s and was used by merchants including butcher s, fishmongers, boulangers and charcuterie specialists.
